In a significant move towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, Oman has substantially revised its target for reducing net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 21% by 2030. This adjustment is a key feature of Oman's updated Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) report, a climate action plan committed to reducing emissions and adapting to climate impacts in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The new target aims for a 21% reduction from the business-as-usual scenario by 2030 (7% committed and 14% conditional), a substantial increase from the previous NDC target of 7%. Two-thirds of the targeted reduction are conditional on factors such as international climate financing, technology transfers, activation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and support for capacity-building programs. Oman plans to achieve these reductions through energy efficiency measures and the adoption of green electrification technologies. The revision aligns Oman's climate action plans with broader sustainability goals, including Oman Vision 2040, the National Strategy for an Orderly Transition to Net Zero, and the Environmental Policy for the Energy Sector. The baseline year for reductions has shifted to 2021, acknowledging the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emissions across various sectors. The updated NDC outlines efforts to cut emissions in the oil and gas sector, including the use of carbon capture, use, and storage technologies, powering projects with renewables, and developing utility-scale solar and wind power projects. Oman is also actively pursuing a green hydrogen industry and aims to produce at least 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2027."
