On Wednesday, the Ministry of Information organized a workshop titled "Omani Journalism: The Reality and Opportunities of Sustainability." The workshop delved into strategies for the advancement of Omani press entities, focusing on ensuring their long-term sustainability through an innovation program endorsed by the Ministry of Information. This program is designed to incorporate a specific timeframe for follow-up and assessment procedures.
Key participants in the workshop included Mohammed Said Al Balushi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information, along with editors-in-chief, managers, and editors from local press establishments. International experts, academics, journalism-specialized university students, representatives from the Oman Journalists Association, and delegates from advertising agencies were also present.
The workshop explored the outcomes of the UNESCO-affiliated "International Programme for Development Communication (IPDC)" with the primary goal of seeking IPDC support to enhance the Omani media and journalism sector and ensure its sustainability on a global scale.
Several challenges facing press establishments in the Sultanate of Oman were discussed in five sessions during the workshop. The first session provided an overview of global challenges in journalism, considering UNESCO research findings and IPDC recommendations. The second session diagnosed the reality and challenges facing private press establishments in Oman, reviewing examples of programs pursued by these entities. The third session focused on the role of the government in supporting the sustainability of private press establishments, examining proposed roles and studying international experiences in organizing the journalism sector.
The fourth session explored the role of journalism institutions in developing more sustainable business models, reviewing practical experiences in adapting global models to achieve transformation. The fifth session explored prospects for technical development and assessed the adaptability of journalism establishments to future trends, particularly in light of evolving applications of artificial intelligence.
Mohammed Said Al Balushi stated that the workshop aimed to elevate the status of local journalism, enabling it to address emerging domestic and global challenges. He highlighted the collaboration with Arab and international researchers, specialists, and academics to shape a vision that serves journalism practices and elevates standards.
