Oman is exposed to a new, stronger wave of COVID-19 and the new strains are spreading more among young people, Dr. Zaid Al-Hinai, assistant professor and consultant of infectious diseases at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, warned.

Dr. Al Hanai said in an interview with Oman TV: "We in Oman are exposed to a new, stronger wave of COVID-19. In order to reach community immunity, vaccinations must be given to more than 60% of the population, which means vaccinating more than 10,000 people per day for six months."

"The danger comes if there is a community transfer of the new strain so that it gets out of control and infections rise sharply. Therefore, the Ministry of Health in the Sultanate warns of the dangers of not adhering to preventive measures," he explained .

D. Zaid Al Hinai said: "The new strains reduced optimism about the possibility of emerging from the pandemic by the summer, because it is spreading faster and controlling it is more difficult."

"It was noted that the spread of the new strain of Corona among the young is more than the previous strain, and here the risk increases, and the seriousness of the virus itself is almost the same," he confirmed.

Dr. Zaid Al-Hinai added: "The South Africa strain is the most resistant strain to the vaccine, and it may be more dangerous compared to other strains such as the British strain. "
