With 42 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, Oman recorded the highest number of new infections for the first time in more than three months.
According to the data from Ministry of Health, the Sultanate last registered 44 cases on September 16, 2021. With 33 cases, Muscat registered the highest on Wednesday, while no deaths have been recorded in the country.
The rise in cases comes after MOH registered 17 cases of Omicron variant this month. On December 13, the first two cases of Omicron was registered in Oman in two citizens who came from abroad, while a week later, 15 new cases were registered in the country.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Committee urged the public from the age of 18 and above to take the booster dose. “Field studies in more than one country showed that the booster dose offers protection against symptoms from 30% to 75%,” said Dr Zaid Al Khattab Al Hinai, Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine, and an infectious diseases consultant at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital.
Recently, many countries saw major rise in Covid-19 infection, hospitalisation and death cases that compelled them to go for lockdowns, said Dr. Zaid, who cautioned against a probable similar scenario in the Sultanate of Oman if not enough measures are undertaken, among them the booster dose.
