The tropical cyclone 'Tej' has commenced a gradual weakening process, resulting in its reclassification as a Category 2 tropical cyclone, according to Oman Meteorology.

In an online statement, Oman Meteorology reported, 'Tej's tropical condition is gradually weakening, leading to its reclassification as a Category 2 tropical cyclone, with the possibility of further reduction to a Category 1 tropical cyclone within the next 12 hours.'

As of Sunday, October 22, 2023, the tropical cyclone 'Tej' was previously categorized as a Category 3 tropical cyclone when its center was located 400 kilometers away from the coast.

Heavy Rainfall in Oman

Oman Meteorology noted that some Wilayats of Dhofar Governorate experienced heavy rainfall due to the direct impact of the tropical cyclone 'Tej,' as mentioned in their warning No. 4 regarding the cyclone.

According to weather chart analysis from the National Multi Hazards & Early Warning Center, the tropical cyclone's center is currently positioned at Latitude 14.10° N and Longitude 53.48° E, approximately 318 kilometers from the nearest Omani coast. Wind speeds near the center are estimated to range between 95 to 110 knots.

Forecasts indicate that the system will continue its westward movement towards the coasts of Dhofar Governorate and the Republic of Yemen (Al Mahra). The direct impact is expected to intensify in Dhofar and Al Wusta Governorates, leading to heavy rainfall (100-300 mm) with anticipated wadi flows and strong to very severe gusty winds (40-70 knots).

Seas are anticipated to be very rough, with wave heights ranging between 8 to 11 meters. Additionally, storm surges may cause coastal areas at lower elevations to be inundated with seawater.
