Indonesian nationals in Oman who wish to permanently leave the country because their documents have expired will be offered free plane tickets home, if they register for the programme allowing them to depart without paying any labour-related fines, before 4 December, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia has said.

“To attract as many applicants as possible, the Indonesian embassy has worked with the Indonesian government in Jakarta to provide free airplane tickets for those who have registered no later than 4 December, 2020,” said the embassy in a statement.

Those who wish to leave have also been asked by their embassy to contact them so they can help with all the procedures related to their departure.

“The embassy has been making announcements on social media and other virtual communication platforms to its nationals,” added the embassy. “To further widen encouragement for registration, the Indonesian embassy is also holding outreach programmes to provide information about this programme being open for all workers who wish to travel home for good, and exempt them from paying fines.”

There are some 826 absconding Indonesian workers in the country. Most of them live in Muscat, Salalah, Sur, Nizwa, Ibri and Buraimi. During an amnesty declared by the government in 2015, the embassy managed to send home 897 workers.

The number of applicants has reached 121 people, and 80 have already been processed by the Ministry of Labour. It is expected there will be more people who will apply and undergo processing over the next few days, so that they can get free tickets from the government.
