The Sultanate of Oman has expressed its strong appreciation for the vital role played by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in promoting peaceful conflict resolution and adhering to peaceful means, in alignment with the principles and provisions of the UN Charter.

In a speech delivered at the United Nations General Assembly during discussions related to Item 73 concerning the ICJ's report, Mohammed Ali al Shehhi, a member of Oman's permanent delegation to the UN in New York, emphasized Oman's unwavering commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. He highlighted these principles, which encompass the importance of respecting international norms and laws, refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, resolving disputes between countries through peaceful methods, discouraging the use or threat of force, promoting cooperation, and enhancing diplomatic dialogues among nations.

Oman reiterated its steadfast support for the ICJ's missions aimed at upholding international law and the foundational principles of the UN Charter. The Sultanate acknowledged the ICJ's role in strengthening relationships among various UN bodies, particularly its role as the primary judicial institution within the United Nations.

Shehhi reaffirmed Oman's stance on the necessity of peaceful conflict resolution and the rejection of the use or threat of force, in accordance with the UN Charter and its principles.

Furthermore, the Sultanate of Oman expressed its endorsement of UN General Assembly Resolution No. 247/77, dated December 30, 2022, which requested the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on the legal consequences resulting from Israel's continuous violation of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, its long-term occupation of Palestinian territories, illegal settlements, and annexation of lands occupied since 1967. The resolution also sought to examine the legal ramifications of Israel's policies and practices stemming from this occupation and their implications for all countries and the UN as a collective entity.

Oman submitted its written argument to the ICJ in The Hague, in response to UN General Assembly Resolution No. 247/77, which called for the ICJ to provide an opinion on the consequences of Israel's persistent violations of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.

The statement also reaffirmed Oman's unwavering support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and its position in favor of the establishment of an independent Palestinian State with East Jerusalem (Al Quds Al Sharqiya) as its capital.
