Starting January 1, 2024, the Wilayat of Sur in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate is set to commence its celebrations as the newly designated Capital of Arab Tourism for 2024. Collaborating with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, along with partners and relevant authorities, the Office of the Governor of South Al Sharqiyah is orchestrating a comprehensive array of events, activities, and programs. Additionally, numerous projects aimed at enhancing the tourism, aesthetic, and developmental infrastructure of the wilayat are in progress.

Minister of Heritage and Tourism, His Excellency Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, announced, “The Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism, during its 26th session in mid-December in Doha, chose the Wilayat of Sur as the capital of Arab tourism for 2024. This presents a unique opportunity for the ancient wilayat to amplify its tourist appeal through diverse events, ensuring the occasion serves to spotlight its potential, stimulate tourism, and revitalize the region and its environs.”

Sur boasts a wealth of historical, cultural, and tourism assets, as well as robust infrastructure that amplifies its allure to both domestic and international tourists.

Governor of South Al Sharqiyah, His Excellency Dr. Yahya bin Badr Al. Maawali, expressed, “The selection of the Wilayat of Sur as the capital of Arab tourism stems from its exceptional potential, firmly establishing itself on the Arab tourism map due to its rich historical, cultural, and social heritage. It serves as a current tourist hotspot, offering the ancient city an opportunity to deepen its presence on the Arab tourism map.”

The office has initiated collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, partners, and relevant authorities to curate a compelling program of events that encapsulate the historical and cultural heritage defining the Wilayat of Sur.

A forthcoming press conference by the Office of the Governor of South Al Sharqiyah will delve into specific details regarding the celebration of Sur as the capital of Arab tourism.
