The Muscat Municipality has launched a new initiative aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and reducing the risk of flooding in Muttrah.

An official from the municipal authority disclosed that they have issued a tender, inviting specialized companies to bid on the construction of a multi-level car park in Darsait. The primary objectives are to ease traffic congestion, boost local commerce, and promote domestic tourism. In addition to this, the municipality is collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources to solicit bids for the creation of a flood risk reduction system in Muttrah, which includes enhancements to the historic Muttrah Souq.

To further this endeavor, the Muscat Municipality is seeking consulting services for feasibility studies, detailed design, and project supervision for the flood protection system in Muttrah. The project's core aim is to construct protective dams around Muttrah Souq to manage the risk of wadi floods and divert excess water into the sea, the official explained.

Local business owners in Muttrah have welcomed these development plans. Ali al Balushi, a shop owner in the souq, expressed his satisfaction, noting the detrimental impact of past flood-related disruptions on businesses. Aftab S Khan, another shop owner, emphasized how these proposals could significantly alleviate the financial and emotional toll on them, particularly during the rainy season.

Khan elaborated on the necessity to close down shops during rainy weather, which often results in a loss of business and the damage of goods. Resident Nasser al Hosni underscored the importance of these civic improvements and suggested sustainable drainage as a practical solution.

Furthermore, plans are in motion to enhance street vending spaces in Mawaleh and revitalize Kalbouh Park and Naseem Garden in other parts of Muscat.
