The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced the successful completion of the refurbishment and extension of the old southern Runway at Muscat International Airport, and it is now in the final stages of readiness to accommodate aircraft movements.

The CAA has confirmed that the refurbishment of the southern runway has been carried out in strict compliance with safety and regulatory requirements to facilitate safe aircraft landings and take-offs. However, before the runway becomes fully operational, an Aerodrome Certification process is scheduled. This process involves a physical inspection of the runway and taxiways conducted by CAA regulators on behalf of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

In addition, updated charts depicting the new airport layout will be produced and distributed to all airlines for their pilots to use. This will ensure that pilots are well-informed about the revised airport facilities before landing.

Simultaneously, during the Operational Readiness phase, testing and commissioning of the new equipment and systems, such as Instrument Landing and Met Systems, are taking place. This is being coordinated with the Airport Operator and other service providers. Furthermore, Air Traffic Controllers at the airport are undergoing training to become familiar with the new setup and procedures required for the operation of the two runways.

The specific date for the operational commencement of the new Runway will be announced once the Operational readiness and certification process have been successfully completed
